Bristol Ayurveda Clinic – Thursday & Friday

Ayurveda provides us with a toolkit to live a more balanced life. Its focus is on a health body, mind and spirit. Essentially, it helps us to live in harmony with nature.

“Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you”. (Frank Lloyd Wright)

Ayurveda treats each person as unique. Health problems are prevented through massage, diet/ lifestyle/ exercise advice and herbal formulations.  This combined approach helps rebalance the body’s vital energies or doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) to restore physical, mental and spiritual balance. It treats the whole person, not just individual symptoms. A helpful analogy is to view disease as unwanted weeds. Modern medicines are like herbicides, largely treating symptoms but not causes, often with unwanted sife effects.  Ayurveda and other holistic therapies help maintain the soil so that weeds are unable to grow. Ayurveda can help with problems such as:

  • Women’s health issues and pre and post natal care
  • Skin disorders
  • Digestive complaints eg: Chron’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis, IBS
  • Childhood illnesss
  • Respiratory problems and allergies
  • Hypertension
  • Stress, anxiety, insomnia and depression
  • ME/ CFS and Fibromyalgia
  • Joint problems
  • Weight gain
  • Cancer recovery
  • Headaches and migraines

“A treatment is not ideal, if it cures one disease and causes the increase of another disease at one and the same time.” Astanga Samgraha of Vagbhata (Su. 21:29)

A consultation offers the following steps to a more balance mind and body:

  • Initial consultation (up to 75 minutes): Discussion of  your  medical history, current state of health and Ayurvedic psychosomatic constitution (dosha). This is best done if you fill in a health questionnaire prior to your consultation. Important areas are digestion, how you sleep, energy levels and immunity. Ayurveda places great importance on even the smallest signs of things ‘not being quite right’ and these are useful indicators of the doshas becoming unbalanced. The pulse and tongue are assessed to help read symptoms of imbalance.
  • You are then sent a detailed list of diet and lifestyle recommendations, as well as advice on appropriate Ayurvedic herbal remedies, treatments and yoga practices. These are aimed at improving your state of health by avoiding the root causes of imbalance, as well as treating current symptoms.
  • Over the next 4 weeks,  it’s helpful to keep a health diary. For example: Vata types may notice they have less gas and bloating after avoiding raw food. Pitta types may notice they get more irritable after alcohol and spicy food. Kapha types may notice they are less congested if they avoid cold food and drinks. The more you get to know yourself, the easier it becomes to stay balanced.
  • Follow up Consultation (45 minutes): After 2-4 weeks of following your recommendations, this session focuses on changes made and effects on symptoms (done in person or by telephone). Additional herbs and treatments may be prescribed.

This cycle can continue until you feel you have the tools to bring yourself back into balance according to your dosha. If you have a chronic problem (symptoms lasting longer than a year) it’s likely you will need to take herbs for 3-6 months and stick to diet and lifestyle changes to see good results.

“I really enjoyed this [first consultation], a very warm welcome, a sense of being able to talk in a non judgemental, confidential atmosphere. I left inspired and clutching some great advice. I am one stone lighter now then when I had my first consultation, I’d like to have seen this weight reduction be significantly more, but I think it is an appropriate reflection of the effort I’ve been able to put in so far…This has been a very enriching and beneficial experience so far.”

“I have been dipping in and out of the new way of eating and daily routine. I ordered and have read the Ayurveda teach yourself guide. This was very good and it doesn’t feel so complicated now. It took quite a few attempts at getting the Mung bean soup right and I didn’t much care for it for breakfast. But now I love it. Excellent for taking to work, even when I am stressed during the shift, this really helps and I don’t feel I need to binge eat when I get home. This is an amazing change for me. Its great having it in a flask ready to eat, so cheap to make etc.  I purchased a pot of ghee and have enjoyed the new way of cooking vegetables, milky drinks. Yesterday I made my first batch of ghee and I am very proud of my 2 jars! It tastes lovely and was very therapeutic whilst making it.Thank you for sharing in this wisdom. This is what I have been searching for and it feels right”.

“Just making really simple lifestyle changes has been really beneficial, by simply raising my awareness of my needs and habits I have already been able to effect change”.

“I felt some positive change following the initial consultation and massage – calmer, more grounded and much less tense and stressed.  Also more positive and inspired to help myself to feel better”.

“Thanks so much for the consultation – it was really helpful – especially to understand which bits of me are governed by which dosha type – that has really helped me work out a few things – and the most helpful was using my mind and pitta qualities as a strategy for helping my body be healthier and working to minimise kapha/vata (sounds so obvious I know but something has really clicked with this).  I think the fact that it supports my yoga also really helps as it is a coherent life strategy for me” (Catriona).

“Thanks so much for the consultation. As much as anything, it reaffirms my belief that balance and healing begin with our own choice to nurture ourselves and the relationships that support us. “ (Willow)
